hom·o·phone [hoh-muh-fohn] (noun):

 Homophones are like reflections:
the word choices sound similar,
but each word has a different meaning.

What You Need To Know

What happens when you need more than text lingo to craft a winning scholarship essay or to get noticed on a job application? It's time to pull out Standard English!

(Standard English is the style and usage that is generally considered "correct" for formal situations such as writing for school or work.)

We all study "the rules" of grammar in school, but it's easy to zone out at the complexity of the structure of language.

How can we learn to recognize and correctly choose the appropriate word when confronted with homophones?

How can we remember this information?

How to Remember What You Need To Know

Experts say we remember information best when we use as many senses (sight, sound, touch) as possible, and when we create 1) vivid, animated mental pictures, 2) “peg” new information to existing information, and 3) present new information in context, instead of as discrete facts.

This website uses vivid imagery and involves all of the learning styles and many of the senses to engage you in learning and remembering correct homophone use.

Explore cartoons, word games, quizzes, and even a song in your quest to learn which homophone word choice to use and when to use it. Follow the instructions on each page to practice what you're learning by working through each exercise.

You will complete the various exercises individually, in pairs, in groups, and through presentations to the class. Then, you will submit exit tickets identifying what you learned. Help me minimize future students' frustration by submitting a follow-up survey to tell me which of the exercises and methods of presentation were effective and helpful.
